"THE FOREIGNER" OPENS THE 2005-2006 THEATRE SEASON AT LA MIRADA THEATRE
Opens September 30, Press Night October 1
LA MIRADA, CA, September 21, 2005 -- "The Foreigner," an inspired comic romp written by the late Larry Shue, opens the 2005-2006 theatre season at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts September 30 and runs through October 16. "The Foreigner," winner of two Obie Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards as Best New American Play and Best Off-Broadway Production, demonstrates what can happen when a group of devious characters in a small, rural fishing lodge, must deal with a stranger who they believe knows no English.
Directed by Jules Aaron, the McCoy Rigby Entertainment-produced show stars Julia Coffey, Jane A. Johnston, Jamison Jones, Preston Maybank, Michael Rothhaar, Morgan Rusler, and James Leo Ryan.
Aaron has directed over 250 productions Off- and Off-Off Broadway, as well as regional theatres and national tours, working at the Public Theatre in New York, South Coast Repertory, Pasadena Playhouse, Laguna Playhouse, International City Theatre (ICT), TheatreWorks and Actors Theatre of Louisville, among many others. Some of the shows he has directed for McCoy Rigby are "Same Time, Next Year," "The Rainmaker," "The Gin Game," "All My Sons" and "I Ought to be in Pictures."
Coffey has performed in "School for Scandal" at the Mark Taper Forum and Peter Hall's "Measure for Measure" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at the Ahmanson. This is Johnston's third play at La Mirada, having previously appeared in "Les Liaisons Dangereuse" and "Jake's Women." She has also appeared on Broadway in "Happy Hunting," and "Company." This will be Jones' fifth appearance on the La Mirada stage, having previously starred in "The Lion in Winter," "All My Sons," "Dancing at Lughnasa," and "The Rainmaker."
Maybank's extensive New York, regional and touring theatre credits include "View From the Bridge," "Terra Nova" and "Two Gentlemen of Verona" at South Coast Repertory, and numerous TV appearances, including "Colossal Beast" for HBO. Rothhaar, a professional actor since 1975 and a professional theatre director since 1985, has appeared on Broadway in "The Front Page" and "The Corn is Green," in the Geffen's production of "Uncle Vanya," and the American premiere of "Dog Days."
Rusler is a long-time member of LA's Troubadour Theater Company and has appeared in "Paint Your Wagon" at the Geffen Theater, "The Woman in Black," and "Room Service" at The Laguna Playhouse, and "The Importance of Being Earnest" and "On Borrowed Time" at the Pasadena Playhouse. Ryan created the role of alien half-breed, Yosef, in the MGM motion picture Species lll. Broadway credits include "Annie," "Les Miserables," and "Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat."
Sound design is by David Edwards, lighting design by J. Kent Inasy, costume design by Alex Jager, and set design is by Jon Iacovelli. Julia Flores is casting director, Gina Farina is production stage manager, and Jill Leatherwood is general manager.
"The Foreigner" runs for 19 performances: Tues. - Thu., 7:30 p.m.; Fri., 8 p.m.; Sat., 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.; Sun., 2:30 and 7 p.m. (no matinee performance on Sat., October 1 or evening performance on Sun., October 2).
